Each year we’re seeing more and more local and regional events joining the trail and ultra calendar, and it’s making it really tough to decide where and when to race.
As trail runners we often gravitate to the next extreme; longer distances, more elevation, increased technicality, even temperature extremes with races held in deserts, or across the Arctic Circle. Yet I believe there’s huge merit in also joining races which are relaxed, fun and allow real space for runner learning and development.
Just imagine an event held right at the beginning of the season where you could experiment with different clothing and equipment options, trial nutrition and hydration strategies, test new distance plans and catch up with the trail running community in what feels kind of like a massive party?
Well, actually there is…
Welcome to the second edition of Peak Sports’ Last One Standing (LOS), a multi loop race held on 1st November with 6, 12 and 24 hour options. This year the venue moves from Hatta to Kalba, however the stats remain pretty much the same, (a 7.8Km loop with around 380m elevation), allowing runners to complete as many loops as they want in their chosen time. Having run it last year in preparation for moving up into ultra-distances- these are my five-top reasons why I believe this race should be on every trail and ultra-runner’s radar.
It’s A Unique Last Man Standing Format:
You probably know the most common style of Last Man Standing race- where runners start a new loop every hour on the hour with those who fall behind or retiring- getting eliminated. In this race the runner decides if they want to take it slow- but have minimal rest time, or fast and have more- either way- it’s a ton of pressure.
Well, this isn’t that…
Peaks’ LOS standing is different, choose a class (6, 12 or 24 hours) and then do exactly what you want throughout that time- the only pressure comes from you. Run it, walk it, take a nap, hang out at the basecamp… do what you want.
It’s Right at The Beginning of The Season:
For everyone hoping to increase their distances this season, the LOS is nothing short of a gift. Placed right at the beginning of the calendar, it gives runners an opportunity to try out their new distance with a ton of support- both at basecamp and enroute. It’s fun, relaxed and a held on a course that after a few hours you’ll will be able to do with your eyes closed, meaning you can put all your focus entirely on you.
Nutrition and Hydration Trials:
Peaks are well-known for their groaning aid-station tables and this race is no exception with tones of drinks, fruit, and snacks available. However, it’s the opportunity to plan and stock your own aid-station at base camp which really allows the genuine gut-testing to happen.
Limitless Equipment Options:
Again, the fact you return to your own aid-station each loop allows you to bring far more stuff than you ever could on a regular race. Last year I discovered which socks removed toe-nails after 50km and which would be my perfect partners for the season ahead. I also trialled sun/humidity/night clothing options and tested when and where to use poles.
It’s Basically a Big Party:
Let’s be honest, trail and ultra-running can be pretty lonesome, however the LOS format means friends, family, other runners, and even confused members of the public can and do- stay to hang out at base camp. This means as you finish each loop there’s loads of encouragement, help of every kind, and of course, more than a ‘smidge’ of the party spirit.
