Like everything in life there are pros and cons to a home personal training session. On one hand you have the comfort of a completely private session, the undivided attention of the trainer and all your home comforts, yet on the other- you don’t have a gym-team hard at work preparing the perfect workout space.
However, that doesn’t mean your home workout can’t be personalised and something a little special. Don’t believe me? Well, here’s my 7 tips to elevate your next home personal training session.
- Dedicate a specific room to your workout: OK, so you’ve just invested a significant amount of money into getting a personal trainer and the process of getting into shape, so now it’s time to do a little ‘home investment’ too. Choose a room with enough space for you and your coach to workout comfortably. You also need to find a place (basket/drawer etc) to keep your equipment (dumbbells, kettlebells, yoga mat etc.) so they’re tidy yet always on hand.
- Turn the AC on BEFORE you start: If you’re going to be working out in a room you don’t normally use, set an alarm an hour or so before the session to turn on the AC. You’d be really surprised how many clients forget to do this then spend the first 30 minutes in overheated misery!
- Personalise your space: You’re working through a tailor-made programme designed specifically for you, so why not make your environment equally as personalised? Try creating your own motivational gym playlist, maybe you could think about the lighting or even getting some great scents? And of course, don’t forget the essentials you’ll need (drinks, snacks, small towel etc.) for during the session.
- Dress How You Want: Regardless if you’re local gym is a female only space or mixed, it can be a real schlep figuring out which clothing is comfortable, cooling and yet still modest. When you work out at home, there’s only you and me, so relax and choose something which makes you feel great!
- Think privacy: If you’re working out, outside, is the area private from neighbours, gardeners etc? If its inside, is it a room you can close off from others? Plan ahead if you need to add a curtain/room divider etc.
- 100% focus on you: I work with a really diverse group of women, yet they all have one thing in common… they’re REALLY busy! If you can, try to leave your phone outside the room/on silent. Let everyone- the kids, your colleagues, staff know it’s your ‘me’ time. That said, if you REALLY can’t stop, our private sessions can (and often do) accommodate the unexpected too. In the past I’ve paused sessions for important international calls and recently held a gorgeous 3-month-old baby so her mamma could finish her workout.
- Don’t forget to prep for after too: Just because you’re at home it doesn’t mean you should forget post-workout best practice. Think ahead and prep your home with your favourite protein shakes ready in the fridge, any favourite snacks on hand, and you could even think about jumping straight into a relaxing Epsom Salt bath… it’s really all up to you!
